II. MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

Protista is one of the five kingdoms in which living organisms are classified.


The five kingdoms of living things

  • Protists are a very diverse group of organisms.
  • Most of them are microscopic unicellular eukaryotic organisms.
  • A few are large multicellular eukaryotic organisms, like brown algae, kelps and slime molds, but they never form specialized tissues.
  • Most of them live in wet places such as oceans, lakes, ponds or moist soils.

III. CLASSIFICATION 

There are different classifications for this kingdom. One of them differenciates three groups:
  • Animal-like protists: the protozoans.
  • Plant-like protists: the algae.
  • Fungus-like protists: the slime molds. 

IV. PROTOZOANS

Protozoan types

  • Protozoan are animal-like protists.
  • They are unicellular organisms that can move independently and feed by heterotrophy.
  • Nutrition: they are heterothropic. They swallow-up and digest their food.
  • Motion: they move around in search of food, using:
    • Flagella, which look like Indiana Jones´ whip. Ie: Trypanosoma.
    • Cillia, which are like tiny hairs. Ie: Paramaecium.
    • Pseudopodia, which look like little false feet. Ie: Amoeba.
  • Reproduction: some reproduce sexually using gametes, while others reproduce asexually by division.

V. ALGAE

Unicellular microscopic algae

Multicellular algae: Kelps

  • They are plant-like protists. But they are not plants because they do not have stems or leaves, their roots are different from plant roots and they do not produce flowers or seeds.
  • Most of them are microscopic unicellular organisms, like phytoplankton. But some are larger multicellular organisms, like kelp, which can reach 60 meters in length.
  • Nutrition: algae are autotrophic organisms because they can produce their own nutrients. Like plants, they have clorophyll and they perform the photosyntesis. 
  • Motion: unicellular algae move using flagella or pseudopodia; multicellular don´t usually move.
  • Reproduction: some reproduce sexually (combining male and female gametes), asexually (forming spores) or through fragmentation or simple division.

VI. FUN FACTS

  • Some protozoans can be pathogenic parasites for humans and other animals, causing severe diseases like malaria, sleeping sickness or amoebiasis.
  • Algae are the most important photosynthesizing organisms of Earth. They produce more oxygen than all plants combined (around 87% of all the oxygen on Earth).
  • Algae are important to humans in the form of food and medicine.
  • Algae are also used for the production of biofuel, fertilizers and livestock feed. 
  • The phytoplankton is composed of microscopic algae and is key part of oceans and seas, as it is the basis of the feeding of a great variety of marine animals.
  • In some areas of the Indian ocean the sea surface lights up at night. It is so bright that one can read a newspaper. This light is caused by tiny sea algae, the Dino-flagellata (a phenomenon called bioluminiscence).

VIII. GLOSSARY
  • Eukaryotes: single-celled or multi-celled organisms that do contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
  • Protists: the group of eukaryotic organisms that can not be classified as animal, plants, fungi or bacteria.
  • Heterotrophs: organisms that cannot produce their own food, relying on the intake of nutrition from other sources of organic carbon, mainly plants and animal matter.
  • Autotrophs: organisms that can produce their own food using energy derived from the sun (photosynthesis) or from chemical reactions (chemosynthesis). 
  • Photosyntesis: is the process used by plants and algae in which energy is taken from sunlight and then is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into food (sugar).

1. Classification of plants 

Living organism that grows without being able to move, especially grows fixed to the ground and is nourished by the mineral salts and carbon dioxide that it absorbs through the roots or through the pores of the leaves. Plants, like animals, can be classified in many ways.First of all they can be classified as if they have a flower or if they do not have a flower, in second place they can be classified according to their size, place of growth, color, etc ...

2.Parts of Plants

The plants are composed of different parts that in turn perform different functions:

1.Roots: Starting from the bottom we find the roots, which are responsible for holding the plant and nourish the plant with mineral salts from the soil.

2.Stem or Trunk: It is responsible for transporting the raw sap

3. The leaves: Are the organs where photosynthesis is carried out, as well as breathing and transpiration.

4.The flowers: Are the organs in charge of reproduction. From them the fruits and seeds are produced.

5.The fruits: Are the fertilized and mature ovaries that contain the seeds. After the fertilization of the ovule, it becomes a seed and the ovary begins to grow rapidly to become fruit.

2.The most toxic plant in the world is the Oleander, this is due to its delicate shape and flame for both animals and children

BACTERIA

 MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

Bacterias are unicelular microoganisms of a few micrometers long. They don't have a nucleus or organelles like animal and plant cells, but they have a cell wall. Almost all bacterias have flagellum or other movement system.

3 VITAL FUNTIONS

METABOLISM: There are 3 important criteria:  Carbon origin, energy source and electrons donors.
REPRODUCTION: Bacterias have an asexual reproduction, one bacteria divides in two.
INTERACTION: There are 3 partnerships: parasitisms, mutualism and commensalism.

FUN FACTS

The bacterias are the most abundant organisms in the world.
There are bacterias in all terrestrial and marine habitats and also in the most extremes like radioactive waste.
Bacterias can survive in the space!
The first bacteria appears 1.000 million years ago.
There are 10 times more bacterias than human cells in the human body.
In the industry bacterias are very important. For examplre: To make yogurts.
In Spain 35.000 people die by bacterias. (30 times more than with car accidents.)

The classification of bacteria depend of many factors. We can classify them considering its size, form, feeding system, environment, movement,...etc.

Pilus:  Some type of bacteria has pilus for move or  adhere to other cells.

Flagellum: Other type of bacteria have flagellum for movement.
Ribosoma: Complex molecular machine for biological protein synthesis.
Capsule: One of the envelopes of the bacteria cells. It is very strong and protect the cell.
Cell Membrane: One of the envelopes of the bacteria cells. This membrane have control in the transit of water and other substances between in and outside.
Cell Wall: Other cell envelope. Provides cell with structural support and protection.
Nucleoid: The most important part of the cell. Contain the DNA it is the genomic information about all the characteristics and operation of the cell. In the prokaryote cell it don´t have nucleoid membrane.

  -Cocci are some of the smallest bacteria, having a diameter from 0.5 to 1.0 micrometer.
-The human body is home to about 1,000 different species of bacteria. They are aproximately 100 billion of cells.  Some of them are beneficial and others not so much. 


- Some types of experimental bacteria help humans eating plastic or petroleum in the sea and others transform the milk in cheese or yoghourt. Human experiment with bacteria in the space to investigate the radiation effects over the dna mutations, how they join in metal corrosion, etc.

- The smell of rain is produced by actinobacteria and other set of complex substances.





                                Main characteristics


-Bacteria are unicellular organism.

-They don´t have nucleoid membrane so they are prokaryote cells.
-They can move  with flagellum or pilus.
-They can live in extreme environment like Riotinto, Antartica or the space.
-Much of them  make substances that help them survive in their environment obtaining energy by processing iron, cianide, oxigen and other substances. They can be autotrophic or heterotrophic, it is , they can obtain the energy processing inert matter or eating other living things.

- The latest studies make scientists believe that mitochondria in eukaryotic cells could be primitive bacteria that established a symbiosis with them:

Hello I am Nicolás Barraca , I am telling about Fungi

Fungi are a group of living organisms which are classified in their kingdom 
This means they are not animals, plants or bacteria .
Unlike bacteria which have simple prokaryotic cells, fungi have complex eukaryotic cell like 
animals and plants.

Characteristics of Fungi
*They are eukaryotic
*They get their food by decomposing matter or eating off  their hosts as parasites .
*They do not poses chlorophyll like plants.
*They reproduce through  númerous spores rather than pollen, fruis or seeds .
*They are usually not motile, meaning they cannot actively move around.

Types more common: Mushrooms, Mold, Yeast.

The fungus trichoderma is sometimes used  in the process when making stone -making jeans.
