FUNGI
By David
Fungi are a group of living things that are classified in their kingdom. It means that they'r not animals, plants , bacteria ... Unlike the bacteria, that have simple prokaryotic cells (prokaryotic cells don't have a nucleus) fungi have a  complex eukaryotic cells like animals and plants. (eukaryotic cells have a nucleus).

MAIN CHARACTERICTICS - CLASSIFICATION AND TYPES OF FUNGI
PARTS OF FUNGI - THREE VITAL FUNCTIONS - FUN FACTS

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

It's a very diverse group. There are unicellular and multicellular fungi, some microscopic and others that can be very big.

The fungi have the following main characteristics:
  • They have a eukaryotic cell with a fiber wall
  • They cannot actively move around
  • They reproduce by spores
  • They do not possess chlorophyll like plants.

CLASSIFICATION AND TYPES OF FUNGI

The fungi kingdom groups fungus and lichens

PARTS OF FUNGI

This are the parts of fungi:

                 LICHENS                                                                               MOLDS

          MUSHROOMS                                               YEAST (STRUCTURE CELL)

THREE VITAL FUCTIONS:

1) REPRODUCTION: they reproduce specially by spores, not only reproduce sexually, also asexually.

Sexual reproduction:  when the male and female cells that the fungus produces, join           forming other reproductive cells called spores, wich are then expelled.

Asexual reproduction: The main forms of asexual reproduction are: by spores, budding         (the fungus grows a new part of its body) and fragmentation (a piece of the mycelium,              the body of the fungus splits of ).

2) NUTRITION: The fungi utilice both organic compounds and inorganic materials as the source of their nutrient supply.

3) INTERACTION:
The fungi provided essential minerals for land plants, fungi are master decomposers that keep our forest alive. Fungi is a very important living thing on the interaccion process.

The fungi live in humid places, with mild temperatures and protected from the light.

FUN FACTS

Did you know…?

  • The biggest mushroom in the world (armillaria ostoyae) cover 2,385 acres of Malheur National Forest, Oregon (E.E.U.U.),it may also be oldest organism, it is estimated to be around 2,400 years - 8,650 years old
  • Some mushrooms shine in the darkness.
  • Lichens can survive conditions that would kill most organisms, and they are found from the Arctic to the Saharan Desert.
  • 1.6 gr. of yeast produce 1 liter of beer.
  • Only 0.001% of mushrooms are edible.
  • Penicillium mold is the active ingredient in Penicillin. Penicillin is widely used as an antibiotic and it is effective because Penicillium mold kills many types of bacteria.
